Description
The roots of the native Hawaiian Taro plant is used to make poi, a staple of the ancient Hawaiian culture, and is often seen amidst Hawaiis tropical foliage. Taro is believed to one of the earliest cultivated plants, spreading from Eastern India to the pacific islands. Today poi is still a popular local food here in Hawaii, and is often found at luaus and bar-b-ques.
This taro plant, painted in 2014 using watercolor, was surrounded by tiny colorful leaves. I wanted to capture the details of the background and, as such, it took me many painstaking hours of working on this piece.
